According to Scandinavian folklore and mythology, shield maidens were women warriors who volunteered to accompany men into battle and often took part in the fighting as well. They have appeared across different sags such as the Gesta Danorum, Völsunga, and the Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks.
They are also mentioned in stories from the Germanic peoples: Marcomanni, Cimbri, and Goths. The concept of the shieldmaiden developed in the period from the eighth to the tenth centuries among Viking communities and may have inspired the rise of the Valkyries.

What did a shield-maiden do?
Shield-maidens often fought alongside the men and were sometimes just as skilled in battle. These women were often just as capable in battle as the men, and they could use a variety of weapons, such as swords, spears, and bows. Shield-maidens could also take on other societal roles, such as being leaders. An excellent example of a Viking shield maiden leader is Lagertha (also Ladgertha, Ladgerda). She was a Viking shield-maiden, former one-time wife to Viking Ragnar Lodbrok, and the ruler of what is now Norway as recorded by the chronicler Saxo in the 12th century.
What it means to be a shield-maiden?
Shield-maidens are considered to be honor, courage, strength, and pride. They are women who have chosen to fight and protect their people, even when it is dangerous. They are a symbol of female strength and resilience. The shieldmaiden spirit lives on in any person who holds these things dear.
Was Shield Maidens a real thing?
Recent archaeological excavations of ancient Vikings’ settlements discovered in the 20th & 21st centuries show women as warriors. Throughout the Viking iconographic works on Viking-era brooches, metal figurines and curvings depict women equipped with armor, carrying spears, shields, or swords.
Did Viking Shield Maidens exist?
According to the Viking sagas in Norse mythology, there are multiple accounts of warrior women. These sagas were written from the 8th to the 10th centuries, so it's possible that the concept of shield maidens was inspired by these stories, which means the speculation about their existence, if not true, couldn't be far from the truth. We have a comprehensive article on the topic here.
Are Valkyries shield maidens?
No. Shield maidens and Valkyries are entirely different. Valkyrie, or Walkyrie in Old Norse Valkyrja, was the Chooser of the Slain.
A Valkyrie was a maiden who served the god Odin and was tasked to decide the fate of slain warriors in battle. Warriors deemed worthy were chosen and carried on to Valhalla, Odin’s Hall of Heroes. It is believed that they will, later on, come to life and fight beside Odin at Ragnarök.
